Skytripper

Although space exploration is currently for science and research purposes, theres been a growing interest in exploring the unknown. Space travel may seem light-years away, but in the future we will be able to travel in space to visit other planets and galaxies. Skytripper App is a conceptual project that helps users with booking activities for their space trip exploration.

Project Scope:

  • Develop activities for space travelers

  • Design how to book the activities

  • Communicate key information about the booking activities

Role: UX Researcher and Designer Team: Self

Duration: 3 weeks

The Challenge

Build a prototype of a digital product that will serve the needs of the challenge and the target audience for space travel.

The Solution

Skytripper App allows users to book activities in space. It’s a step in the vacation planning that comes after booking your flight and contains reviews about the activities.

Ideation Time

I had an ideation session to help me brainstorm. I created eight different quick sketches of possible designs for the app. Each design reflects a different idea in how to approach the design challenge using different digital devices.

I decided an app that helps users book the activities for their vacation would be a useful tool and decided on Skytripper App.

Research

I created a survey to learn if the review feature of the Skytripper App would be useful to our users. My target group were individuals that traveled at least 1 to 2 times in 2019 for leisure. A total of 36 participants completed the survey.

The results of the survey shows that individuals that traveled in 2019 used reviews before booking an activity. This showed support in having the review feature be included in the Skytripper App.

After conducting the survey, I conducted 30 minute interviews with 5 participants to gain a better understanding of the target user. I asked questions to learn more about the behaviors, needs, and pain points of users that book activities on their vacation. The interviews validated the need for various features on the Skytripper App.

Key Takeaways

  • Individuals take reviews into consideration by evaluating the photos, content, and price before booking an activity

  • Recommendations are valued when planning for activities on a trip

  • Users value content made by other people that have visited the area (ex: bloggers) more than the content produced by companies (ex: hotels and restaurants)

  • Being able to book an activity on the same platform as booking a flight (ex: Priceline) are found to be useful

Pain Points:

  • Evaluating the credibility of reviews and professional photos

  • Ads of other flights and hotels on travel sites and apps are distracting and unrelated

  • Challenging to find specific information within reviews

Needs:

  • Photos from users of their activity

  • Review content that include tips/suggestions

  • Book flight, activities, read reviews all in one place

  • Need maps and distance listed to other activities

Sketching a design plan

I created sketches for the Skytripper App and included important design details.
Lo-fidelity prototype helped to plan things quickly and created a visual map for the design plan.

Lo-Fi Wireframes

The wireframes act as a blueprint for the design and shows the different pages in more detail.

Final Mockup

The Solution

This video shows a user going through a prototype of the Skytripper App.
